Un Tres Bon Weekend Du Poker

Friday night Carole and I went to a hold'em tournament in Surrey, and I won! Finally! Of course, it was the smallest tournament yet, and I only won $120 - but a win is a win, and I was psyched to finally have my first win.

On Saturday night, we went to another tourney - this was even smaller - only 5 people, lol, but I won that one as well, and was morethan happy to add another $80 to my bankroll.

So Sunday, eager to spend that money before it burned a hole in my pocket, we went to Costco with the intention to pickup a cheap handheld GPS unit. Well, I did get me a $250 GPS unit, but we also walked out with a new flatscreen TV for the bedroom, and another back of 500 poker chips - man those chip sets are getting cheap! My last box of 600 chips cost $80, and that was CHEAP compared to the $110 most people were spending, but the set of 500 we picked up yesterday was only $47... so mow we've got enough chips for a multi-table touney of our own!

I'm totally getting into this GPS thing now too... it's so versatile, it's amazing - even more amazing that the thought that a little gizmo the size of a cell phone is actually communicating with outterspace!

Of course, this puppy is taking a lot of time to get all setup and opperational - First stop was the manufacturer's website to download and install the firmware updates. Then it was on to BitTorrent to download some map CDs (yeah, you're supposed to buy the maps ... the unit only comes with major highways and railroads...that's it! But at $150 per country, there's no way I'm spending that kinda dough) - So I found some software for updating the maps, found some great topographical Canadian maps, found a crack for the map CD, but have yet to install them...
I've also found a cool piece of software called GPS TrackMaker which allows you to take ANY map image, like you'd find on Google Maps for instance (street maps, or even sattelite maps!) and then you just punch in the coordinates of at least two waypoints, click where they are on that map, then as you drive/trek, your current position and track are plotted on the map in realtime - it's super cool.

Almost as cool as GEOCaching - this is such an awesome concept... it's like real-life treasure hunts sand there are litterally hundreds of thousands of them around the world, and at least 2000 in B.C. alone... checkout the website to learn more, but basically they give you some coordinates and some clues, and you've got to find the container that's hidden at that spot. Some are in city parks, some are on wilderness mountaintops, some are in the middle of cities! And you never know what you'll find... some people leave money, gift certs, toys, keychains, you never know... but the rules are that you can take anything you want as long as you also leave something, sign the logbook, and put everything back the way it was. This is such a great idea - I can't wait to find my first cache... and as luck would have it, there are two on my way home, and another three within walking distance of my house...

So anyway, there are people who have found (and/or placed) hundreds of caches - it seems like a really neat hobby, and I'm going to give it a try... this doesn't mean I'm giving up on poker though! Got another rourney this weekend!
